We have seen many emails inquiring about the security of our merchandise site, as it is not encrypted with SSL. SSL encryption (recognisable by a URL starting with https://) is a layer of security that is absolutely necessary on websites that collect and use financial information. On sickpuppiesmerch.net, however, we do not collect such details about our customers. Instead, payments are processed completely through PayPal, which DOES use SSL. When one places an order through our website, the customer profile information (name, address, phone number, et cetera) is transferred to PayPal for payment. When we receive your payment for your order, we do not receive any information regarding your method of payment, credit card number, bank routing, or the like. For this reason, please do not be discouraged from purchasing on this site despite the lack of encryption.

On a site like this one, it is far more important to have database security than an SSL certificate. As your personal information (name, address, phone number, and email address) is held in a database on our servers, we want to ensure that your information is held in the most secure manner feasible. Therefore, database access is locked down to the local machine. This type of security mechanism requires an attacker to obtain access to the server itself in order to retrieve any type of information. Such an attack is highly unlikely, given the key-based authentication, passphrase, and additional credentials required to access our servers.
